DAMAR BOWLS
Material experiment.
For this assignment I researched the effect that materials like stone, wood dust, and even cuttlefish bone could have on a natural resin when both are cooked together. The result is a fully biodegradable material.
PROCESS
DAMAR RESIN + WALNUT WOOD
Damar resin combined with walnut sawdust, with a result that still clearly shows the wood fibers.
DAMAR RESIN + CUTTLEFISH BONE
By combining the resin and the cuttlefish bone, the resin gets a sepia color, typical to the cuttlefish.
Damar resin combined with white marble powder, causing the material to lose its translucency while maintaining its yellowish color.
Damar resin combined with a metal grid, which serves as a reinforcement.
CONCLUSIONDamar resin gives very beautiful colors when combined with different materials. To be strong enough the material needs a minimum thickness of 3 mm.
By adding materials the qualities are distributed, so adding e.g. stone or a metal grid makes a very strong material.
Damar resin without addition has a much higher chance of breaking.
