Fish skin lamp
Assignment for ‘Design Realisation’ course, 3rd year.
For this assignment, I chose to work with discarded fish skin sourced from local fish shop Mer du Nord.
To highlight the material and its distinctive texture, I designed a lamp inspired by the shape and structure of traditional fish traps.
The project also involved exploring natural methods of hide preservation through fat tanning — a traditional technique that softens the skin without chemical tanning agents such as chrome or synthetic products. The result is an object that brings together material sensitivity and historical reference in a contemporary design.
